NEPAL UNVEILS NEW 100 RUPEE NOTE WITH ALTERED MAP, INCLUDING INDIAN TERRITORIES

Nepal on Friday announced the printing of a new Rs 100 currency note depicting controversial territories on a map. The decision taken during a meeting, chaired by Prime minister, Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ covers the areas of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, recently incorporated by Nepal.

The minister of information and Communication, Mr. Sharma stated the cabinet authorized the redesign of the ₹100 banknote, replacing the old map with the updated version, the decision taken during a cabinet meeting held on April 25 and May 2. This decision also follows Nepal’s process of updating its political map on June 18, 2020, when it amended its constitution to include strategically crucial areas.

“The meeting of the council of ministers chaired by Prime minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ took a decision to print the new map of Nepal, which includes the of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, Kalapani in the ₹100 denomination bank notes.” Government spokesperson Rekha Sharma stated to the media while briefing about the new decision made by the government.

Nepal shares a border of over 1,850 Km with five indian states- Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The addition of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, Kalapani to Nepal’s new political map has received sharp reactions from India.

India has strongly disagreed with Nepal’s claims, calling them “unilateral” and “untenable”, maintaining that Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, Kalapani are Indian territories. This dispute could be escalated with Nepal’s decision to print the new currency note further increasing tensions between the two countries.
