MONEY HEIST IN DELHI: HOW THIEVES BROKE INTO A JEWELLERY STORE TO STEAL RS 25 CRORE WORTH GOLD

New Delhi: Taking a page out of Spanish drama Money Heist, thieves set upon a jewellery store in Delhi's Jangpura and stole gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 20-25 crore. The incident took place at Umrao Jewellers across two days starting Sunday evening. The theft came to light on Tuesday morning. Police say the burglars are believed to have planned their act and knew about the surveillance equipment in place.

According to reports, the thieves entered the four-floor building from the terrace and then made their way to the ground floor. While making their way, they disconnected the CCTV cameras.

Upon reaching the strongroom, the thieves meticulously drilled a hole in the wall of the strongroom where all the ornaments were kept. They then stole the gold in the strongroom and subsequently also stole the gold jewellery on display at the showroom.

On Tuesday morning, when the showroom owner opened his store, he found he had been robbed off all his jewels. The store remains closed on Mondays.

Sanjeev Jain, owner of the jewellery shop in the Bhogal area which was burgled, told ANI that they closed the shop on Sunday and when they opened it on Tuesday there was a lot of dust in the entire shop. He said the CCTV camera had been damaged.

“We closed the shop on Sunday and when we opened it on Tuesday after an off on Monday, we saw that there was dust in the whole shop and there was a hole in the wall of the strong room... We think they (thieves) have looted everything. There was jewellery worth around Rs 20-25 crore. They entered from the terrace. Everything is damaged including CCTV. An investigation is underway," he said.

Police are currently going through whatever little CCTV footage that could be obtained before the thieves disconnected the cameras. There have been no arrests made so far.

A similar incident was reported in Haryana's Ambala on Monday where thieves broke into a cooperative bank and stole jewellery and other valuables . They drilled a hole in the wall using a gas cutter to enter the bank and broke open 32 lockers. The theft came to light on Monday morning since the bank stays closed on weekends.
