MAN DUPED OF RS 6 CRORE IN GOLD BARS BY SCAMMERS; HERE’S HOW

A self-employed man, 69, from Japan's Kyoto, was recently conned out of gold bars worth $688,000 (Rs 6 crore, approximately). The scam began in June when he received a call from someone claiming to represent a mobile phone company, The Japan Times reported.

The caller warned that his phone service would be disconnected within a couple of hours, and gave a different number to resolve the issue. Following their instructions, the man called the new number. On the other end were scammers posing as police officers.

According to The Japan Times, These fraudsters falsely claimed there was an arrest warrant against him for financial fraud. They also forced him to hand over all his assets to prove his innocence, and even sent the man photos of fake police IDs and arrest warrant via a messaging app called LINE.

On July 17, they instructed him to leave a bag of gold bars, weighing 7.4 kilograms, at his front door. The bag was subsequently stolen. Then, on July 26, the scammers deceived the man a second time, convincing him to leave ¥6.7 million (Rs 4 crore, approximately) in cash at a nearby park. That was also stolen.

Kyoto police discovered a similar scam in June, where a 73-year-old woman in the city was defrauded of gold bars worth approximately ¥52 million (over Rs 3 crore). Two Taiwanese men, aged 23 and 44, were arrested on June 26, suspected of attempting to defraud more gold from the same woman.
