Google Wallet, the digital payment platform developed by Google, is now reportedly vailable in India after years of wait. It is available to download from the Google Play Store, although the rollout is very limited currently. We tried to download the Google Wallet app on a Pixel 8 but got the message that the app wasn’t available in the country. However, a few users have shared screenshots of the app being available. A report by Tech Crunch also mentions that the app was made available for a limited time on Play Store.

Previously, several reports recently hinted at the launch of this new digital payment option in India. As per the report by Tech Crunch, Google will keep both Google Pay and Google Wallet apps in India.

Google Wallet: All the details

Google Wallet allows users to store their debit cards, credit cards, loyalty cards, gift cards, and other digital currencies to make payments through mobile devices worldwide. With Google Wallet, you can send money to friends, pay for goods online or offline, and even tap and pay at NFC-enabled terminals using your mobile phone.

However, it differs from UPI-based payment apps such as Google Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, and others, as it would only allow contactless payment from debit or credit cards, and will only work with devices with NFC (Near Field Communication) support in India.

While Google has not officially confirmed the available of Google Wallet in India, some users have been able to download the app from the Google Play Store here. Users with eligible  Android smartwatches with Wear OS support can also download the Google Wallet app on their smartwatch to make contactless payments from the Google Wallet app.

Google Wallet users can also store loyalty cards, gift cards, tickets, boarding passes, and more, in the Google Wallet app. Users can also receive money from others directly into their Google Wallet account.
