A couple named Kumar and Muthukaruppi from Kakkanampatti in Sivagangai district, who survive on daily wage labor, had carefully saved their hard-earned income for years. They converted the cash into ₹500 notes and stored them in a metal container, which they then buried inside their home for safekeeping. Their plan was to use the money for their children's ear-piercing ceremony. However, when they finally dug up the container, they were devastated to discover that termites had severely damaged the currency.

Family left helpless as termites chew through life savings

The couple was left in shock as they found most of the ₹1 lakh in savings shredded and unusable. The emotional and financial toll of losing such a large amount, painstakingly accumulated over the years, left the family in despair. With no idea how to recover from the loss, they appealed to local authorities. The Sivagangai district collector soon became aware of the situation and assured the family that support would be extended to them, with arrangements reportedly underway.
