HYDERABAD: Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn has bagged an order from Apple to make AirPods.
It is likely to invest $200 million.
A Reuters report on Thursday quoted a source as saying that Foxconn plans to set up the factory in Telangana, with construction to start in second half of 2023 and production to commence by end-2024.
The latest development comes less than a fortnight after Foxconn chairman Young Liu inked a memorandum of understanding with the Telangana government for setting up an electronics manufacturing facility in Hyderabad.
The AirPods facility is expected to be set up by Foxconn’s arm, Foxconn Interconnect Technology, the report added.
TOI had earlier quoted Telangana electronics director Sujai Karampuri as saying the Telangana government was in discussions with Foxconn for 200-acre site in Ranga Reddy district.
The Reuters report said Foxconn officials had been debating internally for months “about whether to assemble AirPods due to relatively lower profit margins...”.
