Gold had already been on a strong run before Tuesday's latest move. In Delhi, prices advanced for the fifth straight session on Monday, with the weakening rupee adding to the cost of imported bullion.
According to the All India Sarafa Association, 99.9 per cent purity gold, equivalent to 24-carat gold, gained Rs 2,000 to reach Rs 1.56 lakh per 10 grams. The metal had ended the preceding session at around Rs 1.54 lakh per 10 grams.
However, the international spot market offered a different picture. Spot gold was trading marginally lower at $4,335.32 per ounce.
Gold futures also finished higher in Monday's session. The October contract on MCX increased by Rs 455, or 0.3 per cent, to Rs 1,52,275 per 10 grams.
The rise came amid fresh speculative positions and healthy demand in the physical market. Jewellery manufacturers and retail consumers also contributed to domestic buying interest.
Internationally, the trend was comparatively subdued. Gold futures in New York declined 0.16 per cent to $4,334.53 per ounce.
Why Are Gold Prices Rising?
Currency movements remain an important factor for India's bullion market. Traders said the rupee's depreciation increased the domestic cost of imported gold and silver, providing support to local prices even as international gold prices saw some weakness.
According to news agency PTI, Jatin Trivedi, research analyst at LKP Securities, said that after the recent rise, gold remained almost stable in the global market, but it saw an increase in the domestic markets. Investors are waiting for new economic signals, due to which bullion prices remain strong.
